The successful candidate will work under the direction of the Wastewater Department Superintendent/City Administrator and must be able to meet a 15-minute response time. Performs skilled and manual labor work in the operation of the City’s plant and lift stations to treat wastewater and maintain plant equipment and grounds to comply with EPA and IDNR requirements and standards. Have thorough knowledge of laboratory tests performed in wastewater treatment operations. Work requires significant interpretive judgment within prescribed standards and procedures. Must be versatile and adaptable, demonstrate safe behavior, and able to stay on task and work productively even when not directly supervised, good communication skills, and a CAN-DO attitude. Weekend work on a rotating basis, in-person customer service, being on-call on a rotating basis, responsiveness to emergency calls even when not the primary person on call, working as part of a team and individually are required. HS diploma or GED with general maintenance experience is required. Electrical experience preferred. The candidate must possess a Grade III Iowa Wastewater Treatment Operator’s license. Have or be able to acquire a valid Class B CDL with air brakes and tanker endorsement within six (6) months of employment. Must be a self-starter with a willingness to advance with the department. The primary purpose of this position is to be responsible for assisting with general operation and maintenance of the Wastewater Treatment Facilities, its associated equipment, processes, and Wastewater Pumping Stations. Minimum Requirements: High school graduate or GED certification equivalent. Knowledge, experience, and or schooling in operation, troubleshooting, and repair of the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing equipment used in wastewater treatment is a plus. Biology and Math proficiency are helpful. Ability to pass testing and obtain a Grade 1 Wastewater Operator License within eighteen (18) months from date of hire and a Grade II Operator License within thirty-six (36) months from date of hire. City requires a valid Iowa driver's license and provide proof of insurance. Iowa Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is preferred but not required. Wages, dependent on wastewater certifications range from $24.33-$35.88/hr., with the ability to advance.

Starting salary for fiscal year 2024, plus excellent benefits:
• Utilities Operator Assistant - $24.82 per hour with no certifications.
• Utilities Operator I - $27.58 per hour with a Grade I operator's certificate issued by the State of Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) in a wastewater related field or the Iowa Water Environment Association (IAWEA).
Hours are Monday - Friday, 7 AM - 3:30 PM with additional on-call/overtime hours as needed.

• Complete routine maintenance and minor repairs on all operational equipment, buildings, grounds, vehicles and appurtenances as directed including general cleaning.
• Respond to sewer service calls, lift station and manhole monitor alarms, and other emergencies as directed.
