Your smartphones may be the greatest tool you have to assist you in running your utility.  Here are a few of the most popular smartphone apps that may just benefit you:

 

Dosage Calculations for Water Treatment

The ability to determine the correct chemical dosages is essential for a water treatment specialist.  This app assists with all the basic calculations needed to make necessary changes in treatment including dosage using dry chemicals, liquid chemicals, and chlorine gas.  It also includes a specific gravity calculator and a solution strength mix calculator to further assist the water operator.

 

Effective Utility Management

This app is designed for macro-level insight into operations, guiding municipalities to effective utility management (EUM) and sustainability.  It contains assessment and benchmarking tools that work in conjunction with EUM and Sustainability training.

For those who go with Apple (iPhone, iPad or iPod touch) instead of Android, Georg Fischer Piping Systems offers an alternative app for pipe diameter and flow velocity calculations.  Designed for on-site planning when no piping system “expert” is nearby, the app allows you to forward calculated measuremtns via e-mail.  And like the old Etch-A-Sketch, you can shake your mobile device to clear and reset.

 

NRWA Water Operations

Designed for both water and wastewater system operators, this NRWA app includes a variety of calculators for common treatment plant activities.  The list includes, but is not limited to: pressure conversion, flow conversion, chlorine demand, feed pump sizing, filtration rate, and calculations related to chemical feed, dosing, and pipe/tank/well disinfections.

 

Pipe Diameter Calculator

Need to calculate a pipe diameter?  Many downloads and reviews suggest that this app is as guick and easy as it claims.  Enter the desired stream flow velocity and known volume or mass flow rate, and the app will calculate the proper internal diameter requirements for round pipe.  Conversely, run and check on stream velocity by entering the known internal pipe diameter and flow rate.

ProTeck Water Pro is another calculation app, but it’s notable and included on the list for its everything-and-the-kitchen-sink scope.  Suitable for both water utility professionals and engineers, it can calculate pump power, flow rate, head and efficiency; flow rates for full-pipe open-discharge and open-channel rectangular weirs; water loss for three different types of water line breaks (holes, cracks, and circular breaks); and all the common formulas and unit conversions, in either US or SI units.  It also includes “disinfection estimators” for tanks and pipelines.

 

SAM-1 Smart Aqua Meter

This app turns smart devices into pH, oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), conductivity/total dissolved solids (TDS), and temperature measuring meters that not only measure, but also communicate collected data via instant and error-free email.  Users can simply plug the SAM-1 into the audio jack of their smartphone or tablet then plug in the smart sensor to take accurate readings.  Samples can be measured in the lab, field or plant and the readings can be shared via email.

This app is designed for those involved in building or maintaining sewer infrastructure.  The app uses “The Manning Equation” to calculate the necessary pipe diameter and slope for a given project.  The user inputs the desired flow, length, initial ground elevation, and final ground elevation, and the app uses this data to calculate the slope, diameter, depth and tractive force needed.  The user has the option of working in U.S. units or SI units.

 

Tank Level Monitor

Keep track of critical tank levels with this app.  Simply input starting levels and feed rate, and the app will calculate the current tank level every 60 seconds.  The app is designed to monitor a variety of chemicals including peroxide, caustic soda, fluoride, hypochlorite, sulfuric acid, and ethylene, and will display both starting level and current level for each substance.  A low level alert will appear when any thank is at or below low level setpoint and allow the user to update the levels when a tank is filled.  The app can be used to monitor multiple tanks.  Each tank’s level can be emailed to anyone directly from the app.  Designed for large and small water and wastewater treatment plants.

Trimble Connect takes the whole “knowledge is power” concept to the next level, utilizing Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to perform asset management and enable decision-making in water, wastewater, and stormwater operations.  The app collects and connects data from supporting apps-powered by Esri ArcGis-including meter Change-out, Leak Repair, Manhole Inspector, Valve Inspector, Water Mapper, Wastewater Mapper, and Stormwater Mapper.  Details and information can be viewed shared throughout the utility’s workforce. 

 

Waste Water Reclamation Plant

Capacity and aging pipelines are a well-documented problem in the water and wastewater industires.  If you have damaged wastewater pipes, this app can help you determine how much infiltration you’re getting based oupon the size of the break or hole- because knowing is half the battle.

This app has a heavy focus on treatment calculations, but is designed specifically for the wastewater operator/engineer.  It includes more than 75 formulas covering wastewater processes such as activated sludge treatment, sludge digestion and production, chlorination and chemical addition, pumping horsepower and efficiency, and even lab procedures.
